Not necessarily. I prefer to use McCloskey's Spar Varnish which is based on tung oil. I guess the question really is what are you planning to use it for.

now, what do you want it for, the reason others and myself ask is that sometimes spar varnish shouldn't be used..
I have a walnut cupboard and the recommend finish was equal parts boiled liseed oil, spar varnish, and turpintine
That mix is my favourite rubbing finish which is durable and easy to maintain. I think that the is no pratical difference between using a tung or urethane based spar varnish in finishing the cupboard.EnjoyTimTim Lawson
