I’ve been asked to be a godfather to one of my best friend’s youngest son and rather than lay down the usual case of port – (which no doubt his father and i will drink before he is 4!) I want to make him an heirloom quality spice cabinet/ chest. I mean the type that has a door and drawers behind. Can anyone point me in the direction of plans please. Also are there traditional woods that are used for this type of project? I thought of walnut with some contrasting wood for the drawers.
Any help/ comments/ advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

Is this like the one you want to build? If so, the gentleman that made this one may be able to help out with the plans. One like this was on the back cover of FWW several years ago.

I believe that this book has a reprint of a FWW article on building one.
FWW, no. 124, p36ff., has plans for a really elegant one. I've made two, one in cherry and one in walnut, as wedding presents for a son and a god-daughter. I modified both to include an inlay on the inside with the wedding date. The only thing they don't incorporate is a hidden compartment but I decided to forego that because of the overall elegance. AWW and Popular Woodworking also had plans for some fairly nice ones a few years ago, but I didn't think either was as striking as the one in FWW. If you're really interested in the subject the Chester County Historical Society in W. Chester, PA, published a book a few years ago on the subject. It's now out of print but can be obtained through interlibrary loan and is worth looking at.
Thanks DP. I'm in England so interlibrary loan may be awkward. I'll get a back order copy of issue 124. Are you sure thats the right one!
Cheers

Yes, I doublechecked. It's issue 124 May/June 1997, pg36ff. The article is titled 'Pennsylvania Spice Box' and is by D. Douglas Mooberry. The cover shows a B/W picture of Chris Beeksvoort working on a sleigh bed.
Good luck!!
Tim,
I checked the Taunton site and it shows FWW #124 as not available. The spice box plan is available; check this link:

The link below shows a picture of the box at the bottom of the page:

While that is an elegant box, it is not the one featured in the Moobery article.
Sorry about that. It appeared there was a link between them.Bill Arnold - Custom Woodcrafting

Maybe to late but issue #72 of fww also has a spice box.
You might want to contact Doug Moobery who made the spice chest in FWW 124 and ask him if he'd be willing to send you a reprint of the article if you can't get a copy of the magazine. His website is http://www.kinlochwoodworking.com. I've found him to be a really nice guy and very willing to be helpful. Also have you checked with Taunton to see if they have a reprint of the article available?
Thanks I did get hold of the article in the online plans bit.
Cheers

Tim,
I ordered some plans from http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com
They are Carlyle Lynch prints, so they are good quality. The Spice Cabinet order number is LL-OS-9, $16.95 US w/o shipping.
Hope this helps,
Dave
