I’m building a spindle chair with a solid wood seat. To get the width I need, I glued two 5/4 red oak planks together. Will this be strong enough for the seat or is there a way to reinforce the glue joint so it won’t fail?

Probably strong enough, but a spline joint in a contrasting wood might be nice.

what does the chair look like? maybe a photo?

5/4 is kind of thin for a spindle chair. Not a lot of meat for the leg-to-seat joints. I would also try to avoid putting the leg or spindle holes through the joint.
