Most everything I’ve read suggests that when sanding one should start with the coarsest grit necessary to remove scratches and imperfections and then to proceed with each higher grit in succession until the final finish is achieved. Ex: 80, 120, 150, 180, 220. For 4-1/2″ spindle sanders I’ve only found 60, 80, 120 & 240 grits. Is hand sanding needed between the 120 & 240 or is an acceptable finish achieved by skipping the intermediate grits?
Additionally when purchasing sanding sleeves most sources I’ve found only offer sets of sleeves such as 6 sizes of 80 grit, 6 sizes of 120 grit and 6 sizes of 240 grit or some variation but usually it’s 6 sizes of a specific grit. Buying this way I’m going to end up with a lot of sleeves never used. Does anyone have a source where specific grits/sizes can be purchased economically. Ex. 6 80 grit 2″, 4 120 grit 2″, 2 240 grit 3/4″ or any combination other than predetermined sets? I’ve found 1 maybe 2 online but they are kind of pricey.
I apologize for the length of the question but any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks,
BobE

Going from 120 to 240 is fine. When hand sanding I go from 120 to 220. I find no need to go 120-150-180-220.
Klingspor’s sells individual sleeves. Check ‘em out:

I get pretty much all of my sanding supplies from Klingspors. Highly recommended.
I just sand with whatever is on the sander, usually 80 grit then go to hand sanding. Usually the finish is along the grain so reasonably easy to sand out scratches - for me the spindle is for shaping more than finishing.
Same, except I use 120 for pretty much everything on the spindle sander.
I wanted to thank everyone for the feedback.

Those grit sequences work fine. Buy from Klingspores almost exclusively for years. Love the bulk boxes too.
