The guard on my Makita 7001NB is starting to hang up a bit once I’ve cleared the material, could it be anything besides the spring?

After blowing out the dust, try a little WD-40 or silicone spray. Its amazing what cleaning & lubricating does for your tools.
Will do. I'll let you know how I make out.
Not familiar with the model# you mentioned but there was a recall on the 7 1/4" 5740NB because of the guard. Might be worth checking into.
