We just installed a new planer with a spiral cutter head. The machine leaves little ridges and some low areas on the board after planing. We removed ALL the carbide bits and cleaned them, cleaned the head and reinstalled the cutters. We still have the same problem as before. Is this a problem with spiral heads? The ridges look like a nick in a regular straight knife head.
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
When I ordered my oliver jointer I was hot for the helical carbide insert head. They asked me how I would be using the jointer and indicated the helical head behaved as you have observed. Instead they recommended a spiral knife head. It's hard to argue with someone encouraging me to spend less money so I went with the spiral head. It will be at least ####couple of weeks before I get the oliver operational so hearsay is the best I can do ATM.
First of all I am not familiar with spiral cutting heads. I'm assuming yours has the triangular inserts that you turn to get a new edge. Are there ridges across the width of the board or only in one or more places? Are the tables in plane? Is the outfeed table straight across the width and length. Could be a dip in the out feed table, may be the outfeed table is set up a bit low in relation to the cutters. If this doesn't help call manufacturer tech.

Mike,
This planer uses 4 sided carbide inserts. The ridges run the length of board. The table is one piece and is even on both sides. The problem appears to be in the cutter head and the way the inserts are set. The supplier is trying to get intouch with the Mfg tech support.
