I have seen demoed at a woodworking show a tool which cuts spirals into round wood posts. I would like to do this on a miniature scale, for example the 1:12 scale. This means the posts are about 3 inches long and maybe quarter inch in diameter. The idea is to use a router (Dremel tool style) which will pass down the post as the post turns at some gear-related rate. Where can I get such a tool?

You might keep an eye out on Ebay and see if you can pick up a Sears Router Crafter.

gym,
Unless you are planning to do dozens of these, it'll be easy to just lay them out and carve them by hand.
I'm not aware of any commercial tool that would duplicate on such a small scale what the old sears router tool does. Maybe a Holtzapfel lathe, or a small metal lathe with gear cutting capability. What was the little lathe used to be advertised in Popular Mechanics, Unimat, Minimat something like that.

Thanks for the info. The person who actually wants to do this has the old sears tool but it is too sloppy and large for this work. I guess a related question would be does a miniature version of the tool exist?

ebay has one for sale right now, I think I saw it in lathes.

I've never seen a mini version of the tool you are looking for. Copy a full sized one and reduce it in size. Proxxon, micromark are just two of other companies that make mini machines.

A google search will hook you up with other mini makers so they might have some ideas. Proactive searches are quicker than asking for answers in my experience
