Spiral router bits with pilot bearings
Can anyone enlighten me about the spiral router bits that have pilots bearings for edge trimming? Would they be less likely to cause tearout when routing tight inside or outside radiuses? I would specifically be looking for a 1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch size with the bearings at the tip. The only one I have found was $78.00, which is fine if it works better than a $25.00 straight bit. Please suggest sources if you have any. Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question, but there's another configuration that might work and is much less expensive. Click here (and scroll to 2nd group) for the shear angle bits with bearings. Maybe Pat will see the posts and give us his thoughts.

Great catch, FG. That would do the job as well, I believe. Do you have any experience with this brand?
Nope, I personally haven't bought any MLCS bits (yet). But most of the name-brands should have that bit in their "stable" I'd think.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-) Do unto others as you tell them they should do unto you....
no more tool doc sorry to see that

have you tried MCLS for that bit. I am pretty sure they carry the spiral w/ bearing.

I will check this out. Thanks.
I bought a upcut/downcut spiral a few years back and have found it to be very good. it cuts smoother and with less tear out -- I'd say all in all very good value compared with straight cutters. I haven't had to have it sharpened yet but I bet I won't enjoy that.
Thanks for the input. I'm going with one from MLCS. They have a web site and had it on sale. For my work it will be worth it because I use pattern bits to duplicate parts that I am producing multiple pieces of. The plain spiral bit that I have is an an improvement over its straight counterparts because it doesn't grab the work piece. I use white oak mostly and I have had some uncomfortable moments with straight bits on inside radiuses in that wood.
Forestgirl turned me on to those about a month ago. I found one in a three quarter inch diamter with a helix type spiral that really made a nice clean cut.
I have now used the devil out of them and am very satisfied. They are cleaner cutting than the half inch types and the helix makes a nice clean cut as well.
