Will the splines show ? You can use either ply or solid , but for strength if you use solid the grain should not run with the length of the joint , rather short grain across the joint is stronger . If just the top edge of the spline will show when the box is open then you can use a piece of solid on top of a piece of ply , just for looks .
good luck dusty

In this situation the splines will be covered with edge treatment, I was hoping I wouldn't have a problem using solid stock because it will be easier to dimension that to the size of my saw kerf.
I appreciate your response, it reinforced my plan of using solid.
Thanks again

Here is a spline where I use solid stock - contrasting too. Spline is black walunt, frame is white oak.

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

Nice piece, I love the contrast of the oak and walnut, just finished a Fly Tying Bench for a buddy at work, used oak and walnut, with a tung oil finish, no stain, the contrasting woods looked really good together.
I use alot of highly figured, contrasting woods in my project just so I can avoid staining.
Thanks again for you input
