I am trying to finish a maple veneered cabinet with an oil based varnish/stain. The maple veneer is splotching badly. I would like to use shellac as a sealer before staining, but alas I cannot find any shellac where I live. (In Israel) Can I use sanding sealer to seal the wood and reduce the splotching?
Thanks for your help,
Yonatan

Yes - spray on one thin coat on a scrap board first and test using the stain over the sealed surface to see results before applying to the project cabinet. Lightly sand the sanding sealer before applying the stain.

As long as the solvent in the topcoat or stain
does not redisolve the barrier coat. Shellac would be the best if you can get it, it is also an excellent vapor barrier.Glue size would also work well elmers white glue mixesd with hot water. Start with about 10 parts hot water to 1 part glue, it's been a while since I used it but it works very well. As already noted make test pieces to work everything out
Have you looked for Zinsser's seal coat? It is a 1lb cut dewaxed shellac. cut 50/50 for a wash coat.
