I would like to hear opinions on spokeshaves – push or pull. I use only metal spokeshaves – Record, Stanley etc and I push.

Generally I pull my spoke shaves but I have pushed them when working on oddly shaped work. It is the same as scrappers, hand planes and most any other hand tool, use it safe and in a manor that feels good to you.

HI Wayne,
I recently bought the Veritas metal spokeshave. It's worth the money. I use it for the final stokes and get perfect results. I use the Stanley fro quick removal. I'm a pull guy. Scrapers too.

Don,
I haven't seen vertis spokeshave but did see that L-N has a new one out. I have a couple record (flat sole and curved) and have tuned as best as possible and they still leave a lot to be desired. May just be operator error.

Check it out, the Lee Valley spoke plane it is real piece of work.

Jim -- The Record spokeshaves will frustrate even the best woodworker no matter how hard you try to "tune" them. See the article a month or two back in FWW on how to spend a couple of days making them work. I got a Lie-Nielsen for Christmas and it is a whole different world. Will change your mind about spokeshaves. Don't know about the others...
W_,
Add me to the list of pullers.

I vote for learning to do both. Beats walking around to the other side of the board when the grain changes direction:-). Same with scrapers.
Paul
Pull. the L-N brass spokes are very small.
