Hello to the experts-
I have a maple desk top shot with straight laquer 10 years ago. When I decided to re-purpose the desk I found lots of little black circles in the finish caused by the rubber feet of various computer peripherals- scanners, monitors etc.
They seem to be well into the finish- certainly won’t clean off.
I’d be okay with stripping the finish and trying something new..
The question- Do you think the stains are into the wood?
What finish would prevent the spotting?
I appreciate any suggestions

dtraversi,
Have you tried cleaning them with a solvent like naptha? My gut feeling is the spots from the rubber or plastic are trapped in the finish. It's possible it migrated into the wood, but there is only one way to determine that and of course that's stripping.
I would suggest a pre catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish for refinishing it. These coatings are quite resistant to the ills you described. Just be sure and let them cure well before subjecting them to the weight of your computer etc.
A lacquer rep I knew always said"At least 30 days for use and abuse"
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Hey Peter28-
I have naptha! I'll give it a try- I'll post back if it works- otherwise I strip.
I appreciate the different perspective.
