What is a good starting pressure for a conventional spray gun for applying lacquer? I am getting a white cotton on the edges of the spray.

Cotton
There are many variables beside pressure. White cotton may mean the lacquer is drying before it lands. You can try lowering the pressure, opening the fluid nozzel, tighten up the pattern, and / or add retarder -
