I’ll be working with my first hvlp sprayer. I’m planning on using it for little jobs around the house. The sprayer is a porter cable gravity feed not to fancy.
So here’s my question, How can you tell which needle setup to use (or purchase) when there’s no direction at all. It comes with a 1.5 needle setup there are more sizes to purchase… do I need them all or is it a matter of thinning properly. I’ve purchased taunton’s book on finishing and it’s very informative, but gives no specifics. I plan on using it for vanishes for my canoe to painting various little things around the house.
Should I be jumping in and trying out various mixes and needles trial by fire or….. am I missing the point somewhere. I’ve seen some info about a viscosity cup but i’m not sure if that’s the direction I need to go, and if so where to get one.
Thanks in advance!

I think you have to decide what typ of finish you are going to be using and call the manufacturer and find out if you have the correct n&n set up. Usually they will set it up with a "multi purpose" n&n. It will give you a good finish not a great finish.

A gravity feed HVLP unit will spray thin bodied material fine.
Stay away from heavier materials like latex or acrylic finishes, as you would have to thin them too much. You need a pressure feed for those. Water based or solvent based lacquer should do fine with that needle.
Start out with the reccomended pressure and fan width setting and spray some test patterns on brown construction paper. The brown paper will assist you in getting a good pattern as everything shows up it clearly. After you get that down, spray some sanded wood laying flat to see how thick your film is.
After you find the settings you like, be sure to write them down with the type of material you're using.
