I am about to tackle a large kitchen cab job for my own kitchen and I am curious to know about spraying the stain as opposed to brushing it or with a rag. I have always done it this way but most my projects were small enough that I could use a brush or rag. What is the technique for spraying stain. Do you need a helper to start wiping. What are the dos and dont’s so i dont screw up.
thanks

So you don't mess up, practice on a scrap first with your gun settings. You can spray it and wipe it down, but that sort of defeats some of the time savings most are after with spraying stain. I cut it down with mineral spirits about 50/50 and play with the pressure and the tip until I get a nice thin even layer. Let it dry. If you look at it and think you have to wipe off, you're putting too much on. Also even when cutting, if you spray (and leave it sit) your color might look different that a scrap done by wiping. With darker colors - like warm chestnut rather than golden oak - it might leave it darker than you anticipate, another thing that you can decide on after a couple of test shots.

I really like the results from spraying the stain.
When I am in a real hurry, and can do it outside, I thin the stain with lacquer thinner, and have used mineral spirts. I usually thin about 50%. I do not have a spray booth, so I like to move it outside. The lacquer thinner drys faster and I get fewer bugs staying around on it to die.
I am building a large entertainment center and I will spay it, open the shop doors and turn on the fans. I will use an HVLP system, but have used a high pressure gun outside with good results. Will use paint thinner.
It is easy to recoat, but it tends to be a thicker more solid look than the wipe on, rub on, it hides the grain.
I have used the method to blend some light and dark areas.
The suggestion to test it is an excellent one.
