I have a question regarding Spraying varish. I tried to spray varnish on a piece of furniture i made recently and i got a orange peel type finish. Can anyone help me fix this problem so that my finish turns out silky smooth, i tried playing with the spray to make it more misty and then with the amount of spray i used so it would run better, and i improved the finish slightly, but not to where i was completely happy.
how do you spray and get a totally flat finish? We are using a good quality gun and air compresser…..I really don’tthink equipment is the problem, but maybe the varnish itself needs to be thined or the technique needs to be perfected…any hints would be appreciated….

Steve, I always thin a little with Naptha for spraying Varnish. The Naptha helps speed the drying so runs are less likely. When you spray, if your coat does not look WET you don't have enough finish to flow out. The trick is to get it wet, but not so wet it runs on your vertical surfaces. It takes some practice to get a good finish spraying poly or varnish, but it can be done.
It sounds to me either your spraying too thick of material or not wet enough coats. You need to try thinning maybe 10-15% with Naptha and respraying.
thanks for the advice....i'll give it a try.
What exactly is Naptha...is it a special paint thinner?
Naptha is a thinner like Mineral Spirits, only it has a faster flash off period, faster drying. Some will just say Naptha and some will be VM&P Naptha either will work.Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
