Don't us spruce or pine for your hall furniture. Use a hardwood.
Spruce has the higest strength to weight ratio of all of the light-weight woods. That is why they used it for airplanes. But it is soft, and will ding easily.
You can control blochiness with a wash-coat.

Moreso than pine? Thanks for your feedback- I'm much obliged-
Well yea, soft and lightweight means that it will ding easily, but that should not stop you if you want to use it. There are probably a thousand people in this country who make a living at some point in their lives taking a chain or a broken piece of concrete and pounding the cr-- out of furniture because that is what some people like.Keep track of where each ding came from and tell your grand-kid where each one came from before you pass it to them.
I made a 'Cabin-Cruiser' fron plans LONG ago from straight grained spruce.. Dings easy? Not what I have in my old boat.. Maybe old wood?I built it back in the 60'.. NICE wood.. No stain! Just fiberglass~
Hey Will, I love the look of that blond wood as it ages. Cabin cruiser? Do you have any photos? "Not what I have in my old boat." I am not sure what I followed what you mean? I knew you were not a pup, but if you were building cruisers back in the sixties. How many years will we be celebrating on your next B-day?
