I just purchased a new work bench which has a shoulder vise and square dog holes along the front. I have searched the internet woodworking sites to find some sort of a hold down that will work easily in the square holes that are already in my bench without routering 3/4″ holes in my bench. Any thoughts on this?

Check out James Krenov books. He made his own wood dogs and gives easy details in one of his books. I am not at home or I would lead you to the correct book.
Thank you for the information...if you find the title/book could you pass that on? Would Woodcraft carry the book? Thanks1flyboy
check the krenov bench dog book name to flyboy
On my bench the holes were large enough to allow me to make an insert to hold 3/4" round holdfasts. The insert is in 2 separate pieces since the rectangular holes were just 3/4" (20mm) wide.
I have a couple of Gramercy holdfasts. They are excellent. While I do have a few round 3/4" holes for them, they also work just fine in the 3/4" square holes along the side of the bench.

Th James Krenov book is THE FINE ART OF CABINETMAKING. I enclose a pic from that. He does not give any dimensions - sort of a 'paint to match and file to fit' operation since all benches are different. Hope your dog holes conform to the shape. When I made my bench I did so and they have worked fine.
Just to be clear: The original poster isn't looking for bench dogs; he's asking if a holdfast (an iron or steel bar with a crook in it) will work in a square dog hole (they're generally intended to be used with round holes).
