Hello all.
my son is in the martial arts stuff.
He wants me to make a wooden man so he can practice on. the big problem is the log is 9″dia. we need four square holes made at different angles, that go all the way through the log.
I can drill the hole, but how do I get it square? my chisels only go so deep.
Any Ideas are welcome.
sincerely . C.A.G.

Curtis. bore the holes first, then with a red hot length of bar stock and repeated plunges and re heating, you'll square the hole.
A good idea to keep the square from wandering from the vertical towards the horrizontal, is to attach two opposing handles and taping a small level across the TEE end.
If you start with a square bar whose section is just a bit wider than the round hole,at first it will go through in one shove.
The subsequent 'Broaching' should be followed with wider cross sections untill the hole is fully square,..
Fully Square? Isn't that a small park in the NY theater district? G'Luck, Stein.
Scully Square?

Hay that's a neat idea a broach, like you would use on,to make a keyway on a shaft.
I'm not sure about the heating, I don't have a furnace or a forge.and my torch would quickly run out of fuel, most likely before I could get the steel red hot.
But thank you for the idea!
Dose any one else have any ideas?
I've tried using a wood rasp. "BOY" that's not going anywhere FAST!
Any ideas are always welcome. C.A.G.
Curtis -
I don't mean to sound like a smart a$$ but - this seems like a perfect excuse to purchase a longer chisel. I look for any reason to buy a new tool! (grin)

Sharpened piece of angle iron, flat steel or square tube. All three if neccessary. Sharpen often as is or flame harden.
New tools... Aw yes.
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
Curtis,
I think Steinmetz's idea with the hot bar stock is great....of course, you'll need to take over the kitchen stove for a day....maybe you could do it Thursday....lol....
I picked up a 5/8" Underhill firmer chisel last week at a tag sale for a buck. This thing is a monster..about 16" long... I guess the timber framers do what your attempting all the time...so there has got to be tools out there...
you can make a chisel out of a leaf spring from a truck. Just take your time when you grind it to width so you don't over heat it. Just find a flat leaf spring junk yard.

It's all been done for you...

Have a look through the chisels and you'll find the Heavy Duty Corner Chisel, 1 inch wide, 9 3/8 long blade, overall length 18.5 inches.
If that doesn't do the job, nothing will! lol
