Hi all,
I have just completed a “rustic” mantle for a long time customer.
Took a huge brick of poplar and attacked it with an angle grinder, and than have hand sanded here and there with 80 grit. The customer has seen it and loves the texture. Now, the problem. I need to stain it really really dark. Not very specific color, just a dark brown. As I understand it the difference in texture and such will affect how the stain takes.
Not really sure how to proceed in order to have a consistency to the color. HELP!!!
Thanks Aaron

So if I understand properly, you don't want huge variances in color, right?
I go back to my old pal, dye. Something like Homestead Finishing's Extra Dark Walnut, mixed full strength or even higher, is in fact, extra dark. ;-)
This rather cheesy pic is of a scrap of Birch I did for a color test. Left side has super blonde shellac on it, right side has orange, both one light wiped coat. Mixed full strength.

It's a waterbased dye, so you need a plan to handle the raising of the grain. Practice anything new on scrap, of course.
