I am having trouble getting a consistent color when applying stain to a cabinet that is being used for a bookcase. The cabinet sides are constructed with a birch veneer plywood that took the stain very nicely. The front facing is maple that is not abosrbing the stain and appears much lighter than the sides.
I am using a Minwax gelstain. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You should have used the same wood all around.HOWEVER you could try a waterstain for a more even color. sand to 280 ---wet wood--let it dry--resand ---220--280--ready for stain- work quickly
