hi peter,
i stained a poplar board with waterborne cherry stain to try and duplicate the
look of curly cherry wood. the resulting color came out too dark and reddish
because I now realize I should not have used the stain full strength ,I should
have diluted it . My question is how can I lighten up the stain on the poplar
board or remove it and restain. I want to duplicate the look of raw
cherry wood?.

Hi Charles,
To get the stain out, you'll need to re-sand it. Your paper may clog a bit when you do this so be sure and change it so you have sharp paper as needed.
A couple of things you can do to lessen the color on the wood;
wet the wood with water just prior to staining. This will inhibit the penetration of the stain a little.
or;
Apply a thin coat of shellac (a wash coat) This will also help control the depth of color.
To take it one step further, on bare wood, apply a pale yellow dye first then follow with the stain. This simple layering technique will add depth and a whole new dimension to the overall look.
Be sure you play with some sample boards first.
Peter
