I don’t usually use stains very often as I prefer the look of the natural wood with a clearcoat, but in the past I have noticed that ash doesn’t seem to want to take stain very easily. Is aniline dye the answer?

Steve,
Ash, like maple, is a very hard wood. Maple is more close grained though. Analine dyes work just fine but just remember to leave whatever you use on longer. You might also try glazing. That produces some really nice color. Just be sure to practice before you actually try it on a piece.
