I am making furniture for donation using 12/4,8/4, 4/4, and 4/4 qtr sawn Ash.
The pieces will probably in households who have little knowledge of caring for wood furniture. The pieces have been pre-sanded to 240 grit.
I have not finished this wood before . I would like to have it a warm light golden brown color.
I waas planning to use a shellac then oil spar varnish.
Can anyone take me through the proper steps in staining and finishing this wood
Thanks!!!

What is oil spar varnish? I know spar varnish, a soft varnish for outdoor work.
Use stain or dye to get the color you like and then coat with either water based or oil based polyurethane; not spar varnish or polyurethane. The latter, like stantheman said, is intended for exterior use and is too soft. Interior poly will be the most durable. Just follow the directions on the product containers.
Great thanks. Would you put a shellac seal coat on it before or after the stain??? Then the poly??
Do sample boards first, no matter what. Use scraps, or the underside of a piece that won't be seen.
Try oil based polyurethane first, by itself. It adds a golden color to ash. If that's what your looking for, you don't have to stain, seal, or anything else.
