Can I apply an good quality solid color stain to a cyrpess adirondack chair? If so is any pre treatment necessary?

Hugh,
I don't see any problem with that. I'm assuming your talking about an exterior grade oil.
I would first make sure there was nothing on the surface of the wood, like a wax that would inhibit penetration of the stain. A light sanding in an inconspicuous area would show you this in a hurry. if so wash it with mineral spirits and dry it . I'd let it sit for a day and then proceed.
Be sure and read the directions on the can. I always tell students, when all else fails, read the directions
