I just finished an oak bookcase for my wife’s cookbooks & I want to stain it the same as our cabinetry in the kitchen. I used the stain, which is oil-based, from Sherwin-Williams (not sure of any other details) by brushing it on then wiping it off. I thought I wiped it off enough & it felt dry 24 hours later, but when I went to apply a wipe-on poly , it started to take the stain off & my rag became as red as the wood. I didn’t take all of the stain out, fortunately, but is there anything that I needed/need to do to stop this? I am hoping that when the first coat of poly dries it will seal the stain in. I usually just use tung oil & call it good, so this is my first experience with stain.
