I’m finishing up a 5 piece bedroom suite done in cherry. Each of the units has a 1/4″ cherry veneer panel insert on both sides.
All was well with the construction and assembly but when I applied a dark stain (Minwax), one of the veneer panels showed a thin white line between the book-match veneer pieces.
OK – no problem, hmmmmmm I took one of my light scrapers and touched up the surface to remove what I thought was glue residue left from the manufacturing of the veneer stock, but when I tried to reapply stain, it was almost completely rejected by the surface. It actually beads up. So now I have a dark cabinet with a ‘very light’ 3″x7″ blotch.
Replacing the panel would be very difficult at this stage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Dave – London Ontario

Tape off surrounding area and try sanding with a scotchbrite pad medium trying to flare it in, try a very small area. Then test it with the stain. If not sand a refinish entire side.
