I am making a toy for my nephew and am wondering what stains are child safe. I am told that these type of stains should have a food safe rating. Through Rockler’s catalog, I have seen two sets of stains that will produce the vibrant colors I am looking for (red, blue, green, etc.) One set is oil based, is nontoxic, but does not have a food safe rating. The other set has a food safe rating and is made out of food coloring dyes. I used food coloring from the store, but it bleeds out when dampened.
