I have made 16 stair treads of Santos Mahogany. My customer has fallen in love with the rich look of the wood. He has asked me to install the treads without leaving nail holes (no face nailing). Any ideas? Possibly a one way fitting? ?

is countersink, screw and bung an option?
Do you have access to the underside of the stairs? We need more info, and post this over at breaktime, lots of top notch pros over there.
Jeff
Tough access on 7 stairs (Pocket holes and screws) no access on rest.
I was thinking of a combination of biscuits on the back butting to the risers and some sort of on way fastener on underside of front 3rd of tread?
Thanks for your help
Hello.
If you are facing existing stairs could you supply photo of situation.? Possible solution would be to route dovetail strips into the back of new risers and underside of new treads screw these to existing stairs (cut off existing nosing if required) and then slide new facing over the strips with glue applied to one end only, this will allow expansion and contraction. If you are covering existing stairs how will you get over the differing rise top and bottom?
regards Teabag.
ps If you made the dovetail piece wedge shape in plan you could drop the treads on and you might only need to slide the treads 1/2''- 3/4'' to lock. (wide end to riser narrow end to nosing.)

Make a template and rout pockets in the stringers for the risers and treads, then install with wedges and glue. Nothing visable from above. Good luck, Art
Make the risers in 2 parts with one part 5/8" thick to nail to stringers and pocket screw to bottom of tread. Then apply 1/8" face to cover pocket screws. Nail through back of riser into tread. Glue tread to stringers.

Lift a thin slice of wood with a chisel being careful not to separate it from the tread. Nail through the area under the lift, sink the nail and glue the lift down over the nail. aloha, mike
