Hi,
Today I got a standley no. 8 type 6 for free. However, it does have a few problems. First the top part of the frog is broke. The handle top is broken. Lastly their is no blade. I know the blade is not an issue but I was wondering if it was worth the effort to tune up. The handle is not a big deal either but what about the frog. The sole is reasonablely flat and their are not cracks. The back of the mouth is not a smooth casting. What say the jury?
Grace,
Kendall

You can't beat free, Kendall. I find it's almost impossible to determine the flatness of a plane until you lap it. On a #8, that's a hefty chunk of iron and a lot of elbow grease. You can always make or buy a new tote or knob but finding a replacement frog might take some searching. A small chip probably won't make any difference in a user. Bringing a veteren back to the fight is always rewarding but it can take some work. I won a bid on both a #7 and #8 a while ago. Restored the #8 but haven't worked on the #7 yet.
Having the lateral adjustment lever missing off the frog would drive me bananas. Seems like I'm always messing with mine trying to get an even cut from the blade. Other than that, your plane would make a nice user. Try Ebay for a replacement frog.
