I just finished reconditioning an old Stanley #12 scraper plane, and need some advice how to mount the blade. Yes, I am embarrassed to have to ask these questions.
I understand that the blade is sharped like a plane iron, not a scraper. I understand that the bevel faces away from the cut, toward the handle, when mounted in the body of the plane. I also understand that the bevel should be about 45 degrees. The scrape is against the sharp edge of the bevel. The blade should be angled forward, toward the cut – perhaps 10 degrees, or so, from perpendicular. Is this information correct? How do I use the blade tilt adjustment to tune the cut?
The scraper works, just not as good as I thought it would. (Yes, the blade is sharp.) It doesn’t seem correct to scrape against the edge of the bevel. Why isn’t the blade sharpened like a scraper (with a burr)?
Thanks for your help.

Bert,
You do burr the edge over (like a scraper).
The adjustable angle of attack allows you to get this set up so it cuts properly. As you would be aware, this angle of attack changes each time you sharpen a card scraper, and it cuts the best shaving at a certain angle of attack. Unlike hand (card) scrapers, where you change the angle of attack easily, this tool needs to be adjusted to mimic this.
Hope it helps. Let us know how take II goes!
Cheers,
eddie
