does anyone know if the depth stop on the stanley 39 can be removed? i have a very rough 39 1/2 (only like 20% japanning) which needs to be restored and the depth stop and screw are in the way. thanks.

I think your plane is a number 39 in 1/2". They made them in various sizes, all 39's but with a fraction to give the width of the dado.

I'm looking at a photo of a #39. It looks like the depth stop is held in place with a 'wing'bolt'. If it went onto the plane after manufacturing, it has to come off somehow. Try some WD-40 on it. My reference lists the plane as being available in 8 different widths, from 1/4 to 1 inch. The 39 1/2 is 1/2 " wide and they were manufactured from 1902 to 1952.
