I inherited this plane from a relative and can’t seem to get it to work. I replaced the blade with a hock scraper blade and rolled the burr on the blade. However when I try and use it I get very chuncky, rough shavings that are not the width of the blade. I have tried setting the blade in different positions and different depths in the scraper but nothing seems to work. I either get no shavings or thick rough shavings. Does anyone have a link to the factory set up manual for this tool? Also the rosewood sole on the plane is very worn and I plan on replacing it with a piece of hard maple. Is this a good wood for the job or is there something else I should consider? Thanks, Matt.

Couple of things are critical for that plane to work well. You need to make sure that the sole of the plane is very flat. You also need to make sure that the blade edge is straight, and in line with the flat sole. If the sole is cupped, you will get inconsistent results as you are describing.
Also, your hook may be a little too aggressive, so if I were you, I would try it with a very sharp blade first, with no burnished hook. Once you get your plane geometry down, you can experiment with burnishing the hook.

Thanks for the help. The original roesewood sole on this plane is badly cupped and worn very thin. I don't think there's enough wood left to flatten the old sole without the screws poking through. I am going to make a new sole from hard maple and see if that helps. Thanks, Matt.
