I have a stanley 55 that has very little plating left and mostly rust and crud. I want to use electrolysis to clean it. I saw at one web site the recomendation to remove the wood handels to prevent damage. How do you remove the main wood handle an a 55 or 45. If it requires the pin in the handle removed, do I just pull the pin out with pliers? Please tell me if you know how. I want the 55 for a user that I am not ashamed to look at. I am thinking about using gun bluing in places that had plating. I am not worried about the value, too many pits.

This process will go much better while music is being played. May I suggest Handel's Messiah?
I kaint spelle.
Good luck. That pin dosen't go all the way through, I don't think, so if its just a user, why not just drill in from the other side and drive it out? Rather then bluing the thing you could jappan it? Those old 45's look great jappaned, a 55 might too.
I too have an old 55, but it is buried while I am building the house. I agree with the "Japaning". But for me, that might mean using a top-quality oil-based enamel. I have used this on other old planes with very good results. You could then mask off the handle.
Pulling a pin with only one end showing might work but you would have to clear an area so pliers could grab it. Might be better to drill from back side as suggested. When re-installing; you could drill the whole shebang oversized and use a brass pin for decorative effect, and thereby fill the larger hole. Drill the new hole just large enough to encompass any damage from the pin-removal process.
I've removed the side handle on a 55 plane. I did it by cutting through the pin with a fine metal-cutting backsaw(razor saw). I cut close to the frame on both sides, and then pulled out the remains of the pin with a pair of needle-nosed pliers with the tip ground down.
I've never had much luck with drilling out pins. The drill bit always seems to wander.
Hope this helps.
