Does anyone know what specific chore the Stanely #82 scraper was designed for? Seems like a bit of a brute for cabinet or furniture purposes.

Here's a pic. Sorry about the scan -- too lazy to set up the digicam.

I read somewhere that in the days before electric sanders, wood floors were smoothed by scraping.

here's one of the internet bibles that may provide a clue.
Cheers,
Isn't that a great site? I've had it bookmarked for a couple of years now. He provides great detail on the different versions of the scraper, but doesn't really explain what type of scraping it was intended for (except to note that Stanley also provided paint scraper blades for it).
I sometimes buy old wood (mostly oak) in the form of torn out cabinets, etc. Because it's heavy and often 1" thick or more, it seems worth it, but I'd think I should scrape the finish off before planing it. Looks like this scraper might do the job. Other than shape (profile), I wonder how the paint scraper blades might differ from the regular blades.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The #82 was used as a floor scraper, forest_girl. Not my idea of "fun."
