I purchased these two stanley planes for $10.00 each at a garage sale and did a little rust removal and re finished the wood. The japaning was about 95% intact. The No. 5 says “Made in the USA” and “Bailey” around the front knob and “No. 5” at the rear. The smoother says “No. 4” and “Bailey” around the front knob. They are both corrugated on the bottom. Does anyone have any idea how old they might be whether they are the older quality planes or some of the newer not so quality stanley planes?

I think that they are type 18s ,made right after WWII. Nice planes with heavy castings. Nice score!

Go to http://www.supertool.com and you'll be able to date them accurately. Details are listed that don't show up in the photos.
From the photos, it looks like both have the 'tall' front knob and the 'kidney' shaped hole in the levre cap. This will put both of them after 1933. The bright chrome of the lever cap seems to place thhem in the mid 1950's ort later. Stanley discontinued both the 4C and the 5C around 1973.They look like they are in great condition and at that price a real steal. Sharpen them and let the curls fly. SawdustSteve
