Stanley Sweetheart Chisel coating – remove it ?
I got a new set of Stanley Sweetheart 750 chisels for Christmas. There is a protective coating on the blades. Should I remove this coating?
They seem fairly sharp. I don’t know if the coating covers the cutting edge. If I remove the coating, should I remove it competely from the whole blade? How would you remove it ?
Thanks for your help.

Yea, remove the coating

Yes, remove the coating, mineral spirits should work. The chisels may seem sharp, but actually not. You will need to spend some time flattening the backs (the none bevelled side) and honing both the back and the bevel to get the chisels truly sharp. If you leave the coating on it will gum up whatever you use for a sharpening medium. If you are unsure how to sharpen them and flatten the backs do an internet search. It isn't that hard, but you don't want to mess them up.
