Hi,
Ever seen “Starrett Global”? I just bought a dial caliper that proudly says Starrett on it and “Made in China” as well. The price was right..about $50 and one of those “woodworker specials” the 1/64″ and 1/100″ scales.
it seems accurate enough but I’m just a bit crest fallen as I always associatted Starrett with Athol Mass…USA. paper work says they’ve been making tools world wide for over 50 years but I must have missed it.
Man just when I tought I got a great deal! Yea right huh? Starrett for $50….
Oh well..

Good grief !!!! Don't you just "love" the global market. Next we'll be outsourcing the US mint and printing $ in China

For years I have chuckled about Starrett "Made in USA" as my Starrett combination square says "Made in Scotland" on it's original Starrett red box.
My Starrett 4R square has no "made in..." designation. Not even the Athol Mass mark.....My older one says Athol Mass but not the new one.I wonder if they're out sourcing components....I really don't usually give this much thought but decided to buy some new Starrett stuff and their web site has all this "Made in USA" hoopla and I was releived to find out at least ONE USA company still is 100% USA.Folks like DeWalt have been out sourcing since day one so who cares, but Starrett?!Oh well seems accurate ...Bro. Take a look at Starrets website they mention that some of there stuff is made over seas but it looks like most of there things are made in the USATroy
Starrett has been around along time. For precision tools, I buy nothing else. Please note that on another current post the question is "Do you use this forum at work?". The overwhelming majority say yes! If this is the way we spend our work time in this country can you blame companies for moving off shore?
This tread brings back some memories. My dad grew up in Athol, Mass and my grandfather worked on the shop floor for Starrett's. My grandfather died in the 1940's but every time we would visit my grandmother the conversation would, at some point, slide over to, "How's Starrett's doing?" I've now moved out of the area so I don't really have any up-to-date information on the company.

they are still the largest employer in Athol,
but a starrett job there is nothing to write home about.also i was under the impression starrett has bought something like dozens
of small precision measuring companies.also faced a federal investigation about precision claims
made by a north carolina division.
something like alleged capabilities an order of magnitude
greater than they achieve.
Espalier,
Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear they've been having some tough times. I still have a few of the old Starrett tools I inherited from my dad. Also, my everyday tri-square is an ancient one I picked up at a garage sale many years ago. It reads "Bates Manufacturing--Orange, Mass". Orange is right next door to Athol but that's a companay I've never heard of before.

I feel your pain.....Not too long ago I went to my local WW shop and decided I would spring for a STARRETT dial caliper, since it is really few and far between that you can anymore buy USA...low and behold, get my new beauty home and I find she was made in China.....still a very nice tool, but it is a STARRETT made in China??.... Just my thoughts.
