I have an idea of starting a wood working shop where I supply all the equipment, the big stuff, table saws, ect. People can come in and after being check out on the equipment can work there on their projects. I’ve been told that liability would be out of this world. Currently I am a aircraft mech/pilot at a flight school. I know liability. I want to know if there are shops out there and if so, how did they do it. If not…..anybody have any suggestions?

I offer class' in my shop. Students show up with a
project in mind or with nothing at all but the desire
to learn. So far it has worked out, but I keep a close eye out and not too many at a time. The monet does cover so of the overhead, but that's not the reason I offer the classes - it's the look on thier
faces when they complete the project or even the first time they cut a joint correctly.

*I am in Ontario and so far there have been 3 shops that I have been at that offer the same type thing. And so far all 3 have closed. I am not sure if we don't have a big enough draw to make this go or what. The last place was also offering classes in wood working, tole painting, stained glass, carving, classes for youths, and offered the shop at an hourly rate. I thought they had a good setup and business was good. My only advise is you should think about trying to do something else while you are trying to get the business up and running. I don't want to discourage you, I think it is a great idea but I have now seen 3 go down.Pat
*Some time ago there was a little blurb in one of the WW mags. I think it was FWW but am not sure. Anyway, Woodcraft Supply sponsors a few "Clubs" of this nature. I know there is one in Virginia, and there is talk of starting one here in Austin, TX. Members pay a usage fee and have access to all the tools you can imagine. Professionals and Businesses cannot utilize the facilities, only non-pros.Give WoodCraft Supply a call and see what they can offer.-- Kevin
