If you apply stain while the spindle turns you'll splash it all over.Brush or apply with a rag, then turn on the lathe and remove any excess with a lint free rag.Actually you may not have to turn the lathe on at all, experiment a little. I do apply shellac, laquer or wax while the lathe is spinning at a slow speed.Pine tends to stain unevenly. You can first apply a sealer,or a 1lb cut of shellac first. If you use a store bought stain sealer, apply with a brush, and while still wet (not dripping)apply the stain.
A very good way of coloring pine is to use orange shellac. Apply one coat, buff it, check the color and repeat if necessary. For an old pine look several coats of orange shellac will be needed. Each coat adds a bit more color, repeat until you get the look you want.If you decide to stain.use a gel stain, blotching will not be as much as a regular stain. Try the shellac first, you can buy a spray can for nominal amount,I think you will like the results.
