I’m wanting to bend the upper back of a rocking chair I’m working on. Someone told me to use separate pieces of wood, so that’s what I have: 3 1/4 ” X 5″ pieces. What I need to know is, do I bend them separate or together. Thank you! Tom

Please clarify. You are bending 3 pieces of 1/4" x 5" wood which will be glued together?? If I understand correctly and the bend is not to severe, you may be able to glue your piece together at once in a form without having to steam bend them depending on the type of wood used.
On the steam bending side of of things. I steam bend combs for my Windsors with a bit of struggling but successfully. I normally work with red oak about 5/8" thick by 3" wide and steam about 45-60 minutes.
Ditto on the glue up instead of steam bending if the dimensions are that. However, one caveat will be that you will see a bit of springback since you are only using 3 plies. Be sure to take that into account when shaping your radius.
