Hello all, I’m looking at buying a new steel city 6″ jointer this Saturday, Any one out there familiar with this new make. I have the history on when and why they recently started and I havd a look at their jointer (and other tools). Any input on this new brand is appreciated. Their jointer has an xtra long bed with a built in mobile base and it looks and feels solid. So here in Victoria it’s going for $799 with a $100.00 rebate.

Morning carpenter...
I have pretty well been over the entire line from Steel City and that resulted in my purchase of their 18" band-saw and 8" jointer. I already have a drill press that doesn't need an up-grade, but if I were in the market theirs would be in my shop with a 6" quill travel and split head for adjustment of it. I wouldn't hesitate on their table-saws either, especially the one with the titanium top. But... I already have a factory reco Uni-saw.
The whole line is solid and designed by "tool guys". I have gotten to know most of the Steel City crew including Scott Box the co-owner. They have put out an excellent line of products and back it with a 5 year warranty.
But.... they won't sit on what they got as many manufacturers do. If they think they can improve on what is already an excellent design.. they wouldn't hesitate to do so. Their 18" band-saw has few flaws with the exception of a set screw under the table to lock the bottom rear thrust bearing. It's a pain to find and get to as the set screw sits recessed. I easily rectified my own saw with a knurled head M6 x1 screw I purchased for $1.25 USD.
I mentioned this on the phone to Jim Box (Scott Box's brother) who heads the technical department. Before I knew it I was on speaker phone with Jim Box.. Scott Box and there chief designer. They went to their floor model after I mentioned it and crawled under-neath. When they came back to the phone, they told me they were calling the factory the following Monday and changing it to a thumb-screw you could easily find and adjust.
"Tool guys" that listen to the consumer with a legitimate better way. Enough said, IMO!
Regards...
