Just got back from the Detroit Wood show…
I know almost everyone is buying 8+” Jointers nowadays…
However, I must say that if I had to give any advice to someone looking at buying a 6″Jointer…it would be this…
Do not buy anything until you see the Steel City 6″ Jointer. Long beds, High switch, just a very substantial looking machine, especially in this category. Show price was pretty reasonable also…$599. I know, you can grab a Grizzly 8″ jointer for around $800. But for guys limited to 110 or who simply don’t want an 8″ jointer, this sure looks nice.

Steel City Toolworks is lookin' good so far. Sarge's review of their bandsaw was thorough and quite complimentary. I'm happy with the mortiser, but still need to give it a solid workout. They seem to have gone the extra mile on their machines!

Yeah...the owner comments have been pretty encouraging so far. Always nice to have another quality choice....
From my perspective they have top quality machins and unbelievable customer service. I got a benchtop mortiser from them about a month ago. It had a problem with the head, which I found the day I put it together. I called them, they shipped out a new head and two other pieces the problem could have been by FEDEX that day and I was up a running the next day.
The mortiser is great too, I have finished two projects since I got it and found it worked great.
Glad you guys are having an opportunity to use some of their equipment. At another show last fall, I sat down w/ one of their Sales Reps and had lunch. Gave me the short story of how the company was put together...seems a few guys from Delta and maybe a couple other companies(I forget the specifics) put SC together.
I just wish I still had some stationary tools left to purchase.
The 6 Jointer struck me especially because when I walked up to it, I honestly thought it was an 8" Jointer due to its heft.
They sure do seem to be doing it right over there. I guess time will tell for certain.
Woodk..
I have never seen a BS that I wouldn't personally cut a 2nd hole to adapt a Y connector to the original dust port to improve saw-dust collection in the bottom. I had purchased a Y connector to do so before I picked up my 18" SC BS. The guys at SC had ask me to give it a try first before I did it as they had sealed it well.
I took the Y connector back two week-ends ago and exchanged for something I needed (Bartley's gel stain) as I see no need with there BS. Not much else on it I would change as they seem to have to have already thought of and done.
Class act in both delivering good quality and standing behind the sale, IMO!

For those who missed it, here's the scoop on Steel City:

According to the FWW article, the group includes members from both Delta and WMH (Jet, Powermatic). Here's the link, but I don't know if you need to be a paid member to access it:http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/ToolGuide/ToolGuideArticle.aspx?id=26320
