I’m looking for a set of moderate price tools for my new benchtop lathe. I saw a set of 8 for $100 by Steelex that looked surprisingly good. They are marked as HSS and the gouges are made from cylinder stock rather than just stamped out. The roughing out gouge was pretty substantial as well. This was not the cheaper set by Steelex that was obviously crap.
Anyone seen or used these? Is it possible to get a starter set of HSS tools for a reasonable price?

Have been turning for last 18 years and have never heard that brand before. But in the last 10 years turning has taken off like never before and everyone is making some gismo to sell you to make a buck. That's the American way right?
In the last 5 years my Job has seemed to take over all my spare time and not very active like I used to be. Where did you find these tools for sale? Have a website?

I saw them at the Tool Peddler. Here is a link: http://www.toolpeddler.com/D2304.htm
Looking at the picture, that sure is not very big or clear. But from what I can tell they look like a Sorby knock off. not saying they are good or bad but from the small picture they seem to be of the better type tools. Not some thing stamped out and an edge put on one end rather it is corect or not.
You will find a lot of the best tools need to be sharpened corectly to work when taken right out of the new wrapper. Maybe some one else out there has tried them. Also I think you said this was a mini-lathe? The skew chisel I think showed was a 1" and the others were not light weights either. Most small lathes, you arn't going to want a 19" tool to try to work with doing smaller scale things that that lathe could do. I have a set of smaller tools for doing small work and real small home made for tiny stuff.
I looked at the site I used to buy all my turning stuff from many years ago ( since they were about the only real source) they have some mid sized tools you can get and some mini sets.. just for your refrence...

Thanks for the link to the site. There are some nice beginner sets in there. The Steelex 6 pc set really does look like a Sorby knockoff.
KK, you'll see the Steelex name in any of the big general WWing catalogs, and many of the smaller ones. Mostly what I remember is low-end options for things like drill bits and other cutting tools. I got a set of their tapered drill/countersinks, and they are terrible. That's not to say, however, that they don't make better tools.forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
SteeleX is a Grizzly brand name which, apparently, is being replaced by the name Woodstock International. Their 2004 catalogue lists items G8945 and G9863 as 8 piece SteeleX lathe chisel sets, selling for $29.95 and $49.95 respectively. Check the Grizzly web site to see if either of these is the set your dealer has. If so, he's way off on the price. (I tried posting the pages here but they won't link properly. Just go to the Grizzly home page and type the item # into the search box.)
