Hi all. I am shamelessly plugging the first ever Fine Woodworking Network Weblog. As a follow up to the article I wrote on home theater furniture in the current issue (#183) of Fine Woodworking Magazine, I have been invited by the editors to keep a “blog” on an entertainment center project that I am building for myself. The project will be documented in a different way than the typical “how to” piece. It’s more of a diary of “what’s going though my head as I’m building” kind of piece. I will be posting new info almost every other day for the next 6-8 weeks. It is informal and will be interactive. I will be answering any questions and discussing comments from viewers as they are posted.
There will be sawdust on the floor, mistakes might be made, my hair may be out of place, flannel shirts might be untucked, it will be the real deal as it happens. You are all invited to join me in the adventure.

BTW just so you know...weblogs read backwards when compared to message boards. Last post shows first. If you are just jumping in you need to scroll down to the bottom of the page and work up. All the comments are expandable and will show full text when you click on them
Is this in (paid) "Members Only" section?I clicked on the link, and the pics were there, but most of the text was garbled -- kind of like one text superimposed on another.********************************************************

No it's in the free section. The software is new and may be a bit buggy. If you are using Firefox switch that page to IE and it may render properly.
Switching to IE solved that problem, but pages take forever to load -- like 3-4 minutes on my broadband connection.********************************************************

I'll give the admin a heads up on that. They know things need to be worked out. It works fine for me but renders different almost every time I look at the page.
With that kind of time to load up a page, the site is just about unuseable. Too bad, it's a nice idea, and from what I have been able to read, I like the way you are handling it. However, everybody does like to know what things cost.......After the head butting I have done with Matt Berger about the changes he has brought to Knots, and now looking at the mess with your site, I would have to say I think he's in over his head.********************************************************

Hey NikkiWood,
Any chance I can get you to send me a screen shot of what the Blog looks like to you? In both IE and FireFox? I use both of these browsers and the blog renders very cleanly for me. As Steve pointed out this is new for us and it is also new for Prospero so there might be a few glitches to work out. Any feedback you and any others care to provide would be much appreciated by us. Send any and all comments to [email protected] subject= blog or post here if you want. Many Thanks -Mark
Matt, I'm totally new to the whole blog thing. When I click on the orange XML link at the bottom of that first page (tag: "Get the RSS feed of this blog"), what is supposed to show up when the window opens? I'm getting a source page (with all the HTML in it). Thanks.
PS: I use updated IE with WindowsXP Home.

Be glad to -- but you'll have to tell me what a "screen shot" is, and then tell me how to do it.********************************************************

NW: A screen shot is where you copy the active screen to your clipboard. All assuming you're using Windows: Make the window you want to take a picture of active, by clicking somewhere in it. Then find your PrtScrn button. Use Alt+PrtScrn to copy it to the clipboard (similar to when you use Control+C to copy something you've highlighted).
OK, then open up Microsoft Paint (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint). After it's open, use Control+V to copy the clipboard contents to Paint. Then save the screenshot using whatever name you want. Remember where you save it! You're all set to email it to Matt by attaching the file.

I'm using "Firefox" and looked great to me.
That's all Greek to me ................... I'm using a Mac. Thanks anyway.********************************************************

I use a Mac also and bundled with the software is a program called Snapz Pro X. This will allow you to take a snapshot of your computer screen and will save it as a pdf or jpg. Look under your applications folder on your hard drive.I am using a Power Mac G4. So I am not sure if you will haxe it if you are using a notebook or an iMac.J.P.http://www.jpkfinefurniture.com
NikkiWood,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I am out of the office this week and just happened to swing by here...I am assuming you are using Safari on your Mac? If not try using that, we don't support IE on a Mac since Apple launched the Safari browser. Either way you should be able to hold down the shift apple(command) and hit the 3 key and that will take a picture of what is currently on your screen. This will place a PDF file labeled picture 1 (or 2 or 3 etc...) on your desktop. Send me an email with it attached.
A couple of other questions: Do you know version of operating system you are using? I am assuming OSX??? If you know put that in the email as well. Thanks -Mark
Mark,I will send you an email, as you requested -- rather than clog up this blog thing with my problems...........********************************************************

Firefox on Mac is another option, some would say, including myself, that it is a far better browser than Safari.
Im still chuggin' along with an OS 9, which won't take Firefox (or Safari). But I am getting a new computer in a week or so, and from everything I have learned, firefox will probably be my browser of choice. Any others I should load up (besides IE)?********************************************************

yeah, you will notice a big difference between 9 and X.BTW, don't rule out IE yet. I am running IE7 beta on my Windows computer and side-by-side with Firefox it comes out ahead in many respects, they have done a very impressive job with this version. The only thing that is keeping me on on Firefox for the time being is Greasemonkey and Performancing, which is only on FF.
I have it in my head that by avoiding IE, I can sidestep some of the viruses that seem to be targeted toward Microsoft products. Any truth to that?********************************************************

On a Macintosh you are not as vulnerable as Windows is, regardless of what browser you use. The big issue with IE6 is that it's about as old as the internet itself :) so thank god for Firefox coming along and booting them in the butt. I wouldn' worry about IE on a Mac, but I would wait for version 7 and until then use Firefox.tm
This blog thing loads just fine for me. (older imac running OS X tiger with an even older operator at the keyboard). There's nothing "too bad" about this, I don't think anybody associated with FWW is in over their head. There is no mess with Steve's site that I can perceive.
Thats good to hear sapwood. It loads fine on my end but formats look different on Firefox than when I'm in IE.
Everybody feel free to jump in on this blog. Its going to be pretty boring if you don't. Thanks, SC
Welcome to the blogosphere. It would be nice if you could add a blogroll to the sidebar, I'm sure there are other woodworker bloggers. Also, you might consider adding technorati or del.icio.us tags to your posts.
BTW, your RSS feed doesn't seem to autodiscover.
tangomike you might as well be talking Chinese to me. The editors are running the blog I'll pass on your suggestion...maybe they will know what the heck you are talking about.
Steve,
As you might have already figured out, blogs are far different from anything else being published on the web, and much of it has to do with how people find your posts and how they subscribe using feeds to your blog. I read over 200 blogs a day and I never go to a single one of them by entering their URL in my browser.By far the most powerful aspect of blogs is the ability to backlink and trackback. What this enables is a true distributed conversation as opposed to simply you writing and people commenting. You might spend some time on the blog search engines (Technorati and Blogpulse are both very good), and over on http://tagsonomy.com/.It's often a challenge for traditional media people to transition to blogs, so while it may be Chinese now I am sure you will pick it up quickly.
Thanks for the feedback I'll pass it on.
Hey tangomike:
I'm a newbie blogger and have commented on Steve's project. How about you jumping in and guiding us with examples of good "blogging?". I know I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
Hey Tango,
Thanks for the feedback as always. This blogging thing is new to us and new to Prosepro as well so there are some pieces parts, that could use some work, we do realize.
In regards to the specifics you have, we are working on adding a "blogroll". Do you have any woodworking blogs that you can recomend? RSS feeds: Currently auto discover is not working because of the way the feed comes from Prospero, but they will be rolling out a major enhancement in the upcoming weeks that should resolve most if not all of these blog issues. -Mark

Steve,
This is the first blog I've read/visited and my thanks to you and to Taunton. Your project has particular relevance since I will be starting a similar project later this year.
Technically, the site loaded quickly, in seconds, with no problems whatsoever.
Doug
