I am making the Patrick Nelson inspired legs from Nov/Dec 1996 article. My problem is that when I make the front inside cut on my router (using his template p. 55) the end of the piece dips into the router blade causing the cut to be uneven. Any way to avoid it?

Make the legs longer
You may try making the legs longer so that the any router damage affects the areas that will be cut off.
Hope that helps.
