When I clicked on a response from Knots in my e-mail, I was not able to get in. The Taunton home page still recognised me as Hammer but when I went to choose my screen name, the box said Hammer was already in use. Does this mean that someone has stolen my long time name. I would hope that nobody would stoop so low and I still exist as the one and only, original Hammer. Thanks for your response.

Hammer1,
Yes it appears that someone was able to register before you hence they where able to secure the Hammer screen name. The old system allowed for multiple "Hammers" in the new system every screen name is unique with the added advantage that now you can search by screen name. -Mark

SYSOP,
what are some of the other 'added advantages'?

currently there are not really any, other than the fact that we now have a very robust registration system that can handle any growth that we have. -MarkSYSOP[email protected]Have you updated your forum profile lately? Please Do!
Thanks for the quick reply, Mark. Were all the screen names erased when the change was made? The Taunton home page still recognizes me with "welcome Hammer". I'm the same Hammer on Woodweb, Quitintime and many other forums. I wondered if I wasn't the one who was already known by that name. If have been hanging out here for quite a while and have seen Hammerinlaw, Hammerin, Hammerandnails but no other Hammer, at least one that has posted. I'm sure there are some who think I'm an obnoxious idiot, why anyone would want to steal my name is questionable. Now, I've lost my number of post credits and can't see posts I've responded to in the past with the thumbs up. How am I ever going to catch up to Forestgirl, now? My profile is current as is my e-mail which hasn't changed. How did another get my name with a different e-mail address? There, also, was no warning about the change taking place today. There was info about the July 26 change but it did not happen. I checked the posts frequently and there was no update that said this was taking place today. Hopefully, my signature won't be taken.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

Best of luck. I think you might be on the right track.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Thanks Forestgirl, I'm whining to anyone that will listen. At least I got in. I sent Hammer an e-mail and it came to me. It's just a computer thing. Jackplane said he sold my nom de plume, but nobody is that good a salesman. It's really only about the woodworking.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Hammer, same thing happen to me and I have just written customer service, before I saw your message. Waiting on a reply. I guess I am now "HWG, fomerly known as Woody"
I sure would like to have my name back!Woody
Sorry about your new name. Hope the OWMBO recognizes you! :)
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
I'm whining to anyone that will listen..Maybe ya two can exchange some wood and be friends again?
Is there a way to connect my old profile and messages back to the new one?
Hammer the same thing happened to me. Some people just gotta have whats not theirs.

You dirty dog, jackplane! How much did you get? I sub out all my 'get even' work to my friend Vito. Hope the new concrete shoes come in your color. Say hello to Davey Jones for me.Beat me daddy / Eight to the bar
ha! It's hard work keeping up with your new tag line.
Someone on ebay offered to do all my sanding and sweeping for a year for your name! Hammer is indeed popular.
hahahahaha cheers
Make sure the dummy empties the dust collector, too! When I was a teacher, students that got detention had to dust down the lights and bar joists in the shop. Of course the machines and floor would get dirty and they had to clean those too. I didn't get many repeat offenders. It was my students that gave me the name Hammer. I think I cured most of them of wanting to be woodworkers.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
hammer,
a nickname is personal. it's earned. you've been robbed.
do you think I can get my creditors to use this program? clean slate, name change?
this new program is supposed to be 'robust'. when did everybody start using that word?
keep at it. we'll all learn something else we really didn't want to know.

Hammer,
Customer service just answered me and says they gave my name away to another user. That really disappoints me, that we weren't given an opportunity to re-register using the names we have always used. Disappoints is an understatement....Woody
Woody, I'm sure this whole change has been a real challenge for the folks working on it. Things hit the fan the first time they tried to launch the change. I imagine it hasn't stopped flying yet. Some poor hapless visitor probably just entered a common nickname and was granted the use. In my time here, I have not seen anyone that didn't conduct themselves politely and with respect. I doubt if the people that took our names had a clue that they were used by some long time members. I think Taunton could have handled the change much better but I don't know any of the logistics that they had to face. If we have lost our screen names, so be it.For the first time I went through the list of visitors to these forums. I don't know if the list is complete but it looks like four or five hundred folks stop by per day. Many of them don't post and I'm sure there are some that only visit on a rare occasion. I saw a hammer, small H, visiting on Aug. 10 that has 0 posts, I also saw a woody, small W on the same day with 3 posts. It's likely they were both newcomers. I welcome them both and hope they get as much out of these forums as I have. It's more about the content than personal recognition. I'll keep using my signature, if I can, just so I don't get any other Hammers in trouble. Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Hey! Who are all these new guys, triplenet, HowardAcheson, MarkRD???--- And will the real Hammer please stand up!
Okay I'm done now.
Cheers. Still Walker1
Hammer, I agree, we welcome the new comers and I don't blame them for taking the names. Woody
Hammer1,
Ah the love of discipline...... I once had a Master Sergeant (USMC) who was my maintenance chief, he handled all the "lil" problems. I called him Hammer once and the troops over heard it, they called him Steam Hammer. And the name stuck. What a great guy.
Ive only been retired for five years. And yes I am still working a full time job (I get that question a lot), just not moving around as much. Joe
Is it really saw dust or wood dust?
Ah the love of discipline...... Just a Old Army tank guy here... Suprise inspection... Some BIG brass walked in and yelled at us for the floor bein' a 'bit' dirty...Our W4 walked in and told the General.. We have a motor pool here that fixes Tanks all day and at night most of us have to pull guard duty protectin' this stuff.. I'd sugguest ya get on the Commander whos' battery brought them dirty tanks in here... We just loved him after that..NO.. we did not snicker.. We KNEW better en' that!
When I was a teacher, students that got detention..
They had to pay for the several rounds of drinks after dinner..I taught adults in a Corp. environment... Kids MUST be ALOT smarter OR we would have no school teachers!
I sub out all my 'get even' work to my friend Vito..Oh geeeee.. I sure hope Mr. Eliot Ness not lookin'..
Well, we've found out what happened with my name and another well known posters name, hammer'n. Seems that the registration wouldn't accept the apostrophe N for hammer'n. He doesn't want my name and would like his own back. There was no thievery going on, just typical computer bull. We'd both like to get our old names and history back and keep up with topics we've been participating in. We'll see what happens as things cool down. We may just have some new screen names but Mark can restore our histories.
A big thank you to SYSOP Mark. He's probably up to his ears in work but has taken the time to e-mail me a couple of times on this matter. Thanks for the extraordinary service.
Don't despair-you are not alone. Someone even stole Philip Marcou, but I was smart, that's why I sign in as Philip and sign off as Philip Marcou.LOL. The trouble is that now all kinds of people have taken the opportunity to metamorphose into another personage. And there's more-I think Will G has attempted to give himself a makeover....
Well, we blew it. We let a golden opportunity just slip by. All these names could have been copyrighted and then sold back to the original owner. A fortune could have been made, and now it's gone.
Oh well, so much for dreaming.
