I recently purchased n old Disston backsaw on ebay. The seller represented it to be in good condition and it is except that the lower part of the blade has a couple of kinks in it. The reinforcing strip on top is dead straight. I didn’t buy it to collect, I bought it to use so I am disappointed to say the least, especially as it is nice otherwise. Before I try to get my money back I thought I’d ask if any of you have a method that will work to straighten it. I’m pretty good at taking the kinks out of regular handsaws but I’ve been unsuccessful with this saw. Help?

The correct way to straighten it is to tap the "reinforcing strip" as you call it, with a light hammer. Start by giving a sharp rap on the end of the strip, driving it towards the handle then try tapping above the distortion in the blade, tapping it down towards the blade.
Ian,
Tried your advice. Worked like a charm, thanks I thought I might have to make a wallhanger out of the saw. Now to joint it and sharpen it, and hopefully it will perform well.

I wouldn't try straightening it myself. For little more than the price of return postage you can have it properly hammered at a saw shop.
