picked up a little Dunlap plane. Just a cheap $8 #3 sized plane. iron is stamped “Made in West Germany”
Got to cleaning it up. Saw a HUGE gap under the frog. I could see at least five full threads of the frogs bolts, when viewed from the tote. Hmm. Frog was nice and solid, didn’t rock. Bolts were about twice as long as most I’ve seen. Looked at the base of the frog. Hmmm. Just a raised rail, all the way around the frog’s bottom. Frog sits on a short ramp, down near the mouth opening, too. Put the plane back together, and sat it beside another I was working on. Hmm, The Dunlap’s frog leans forward about five degrees MORe than it’s neighbor. The other plane had a “normal” 45 degree angle. That means the Dunlap has a 50? Aka, York Pitch?
While it was sitting beside the other plane, noticed something else. The bottom of the tote is longer, by almost an inch. No bolt in it, like a #5 would have. Front knob is a standard “high” knob. The depth adjuster wheel is brass, but it doesn’t match my other brass ones. It falls inbetween the two sizes of wheels Stanley used. It also has just two knurled rings with a single gap between them. Left hand threads, though. Lateral is just a cheap folded steel affair. I think I could change THAT out for a better one, as there is enough room.
So,I sharpened the iron to a 25* bevel, flattened and polished the back. Took it for a spin on some “Knotty Oak” and got…see through shavings! No chatter, just a nice sweesh as it went along.
Lets see, an $8 #3 plane, with a York pitch? And no “L-N’ or “L-V” on it either. Amazing…

Not only do I have this #3 York Pitch Dunlap, I now have it's larger relative, a Dunlap #5 jack plane. Other than it being a 14" long base, and a 2" wide iron, everything else is the same! I've stripped off that ugly red paint on both sets of handles. Gave them a BLO/Poly blend finish. Now they are right there, next to my Millers Falls #8 and #9.
They have both come in quite handy while smoothing out some rough sawn Black Walnut planks. Neither plane cost all that much, either.
Maybe a couple "Diamonds in the rough"?
shot man, you can't even buy a bierhobel for that price!
functionality is important in both cases
