Salvaging and reparing a bunch of old distressed pieces found buried in Mama’s basement, anyone have any experience with STAR 10 product I saw on Rockler site. My intention is not to increase monetary value but to restore as functional pieces, simple finishes (oil), with as much of original construction detail, graining etc, visible as possible. Thanks. Peter,
Can you help with this question? I can't find anyone who has experience with this product. Do you have any general recommendations for refinishing antiques?
Thanks,
Matt
I don't have any experience with that particular stripper. However, with any stripper;
Use basic safety precautions such as gloves and glasses. Once the stripper has been applied, let it work as per directions. The surface can then be removed with a putty knife, scotch pads etc. For heavy surfaces(like paint) you might have to do it twice.
Be sure to have a bucket close by to put all the waste in. When complete, wash the surface well with denatured alcohol. This will remove any traces of stripper left on the surface. Do this in sections and be sure to wipe the surface dry as you go. Afterwards, you can also give it a light wash with warm water and a dash of mild dish soap. Again be sure and dry as you go. The better job you do initially, will determine the overall quality of the job.
Be careful around any veneered surfaces that are lifting. They can be a nightmare when stripper gets underneath. Take your time and plan your work.
